MATCH REPORT BY ROSIE MCKENZIE
HKFC Women’s C Team
Wednesday 9th November
Vs Vets
Result: Draw, 1-1
It was a drizzling and slightly cooler Wednesday night as the HKFC C women’s team took to the King’s Park main pitch to play a match that would be the beginning of their season turn-around.
The game started at a reasonable pace with the C women working hard to take advantage of the Vets being 3 players short. With a few short breaks up the centre and some great teamwork between Flo and Lydia up the left-hand side the C’s were unsuccessful in upsetting the Vets whilst they were down.
With a full team now on the pitch the Vets were out firing with some runs up the centre straight in to the sticks of the C’s strong defenders. After several attempts at scoring the Vets were unable to get through the C’s defence. They had to change their tactics and work for a short corner. After showing their sheer determination and frustration for not being able to break through the C’s defence the C’s very kindly deflected the ball from the Vets short corner and scored a goal for them.
Recognising that they do hold the skills and confidence to score a goal the C’s fought back fast with Kyrah having just come on to the pitch to run up the left-hand side with some short strong 1-2s with Maya and Lydia working well in support. Kyrah then dribbled her way round the Vets defence in to the top of the D to take a quick strike and score, surprising the goalie who didn’t even have a chance to see the ball go flying past. After a couple of unsuccessful short corner attempts but looking great on attack the score was 1 each at half-time.
Enjoying the match and after some constructive and encouraging words from Guest Coach Claire Archer the C’s were determined to get back out there to win.
The second half was played with great determination and few errors from the C’s. Playing the most organised hockey the team has all season the girls were looking good with their strong passes and fast breaks. Lyric made several quick breaks up the right-hand side feeding the ball in to the D, where unfortunately the team was unable to put the ball in goal. Showing great teamwork and support for each other the C’s showed off their skills with great passes up the left from Ellie to Sally, up to Joss, out to Katie and up to Maya on the left-hand side. With a few changes in the forwards and trying different tactics the C’s were unfortunately still not able to get the ball out to their strong stick sides on the right.
The last 5 minutes proved to be very exciting with a few unsuccessful short corners, and a goal disallowed from a short corner as it was lifted, but was a brilliant shot from Joss which proves that the C’s have it in them to make the next short corner count.
After a goal-less second half the match finished as a 1-all draw. The HKFC Women’s C team played extremely well, working together confidently as a team - they are looking like a big threat for HKCC A this Saturday.
Things to work on: quick passing, 2 hands on the stick, using other short corner options, being in front of the defender when receiving the ball, taking free hits quickly
MVP: Kyrah, for going on and doing exactly as she was asked and scoring a fantastic goal!!
