The D team has had a great start to the season with three wins in a row, a draw and then last week we were beaten by Aquila A. Our confidence was knocked and our frustration began to show. So for this Saturday's game against Elite A it was important that we collected ourselves and focused on playing good simple hockey.
Elite is a young, fit team. However, we took it to them. Our first 10 minutes was full of energy. We worked well together getting the ball out of our defence down both the left and right side of the pitch. But as the first half drew to a close, neither team had been able to score. A good talking to from coach Simon Bach at half time got us on track. Yes we had lost last week, but we were still in this game, we just had to fight for it. So we came out all guns blazing. Our passing was more fluid, we backed each other up, we switched the ball left, then right, then left again. We put them under pressure and we ran through their defence, literally. Yes there was some pushing, shoving and elbows from both sides. Sticks flying and girls diving, but we wanted to win this.
Then it happened, a free hit from inside their 25, was received beautifully by Bridget who tapped it across the D to Holly, who passed to Emma who was ever present on the left post. She grappled with the keeper and the ball was in space edging loser to the white line. Emma, now off-balance, somehow managed to get her stick to it again and one final tap saw it drift over the line. 1-0 and 10 minutes to go.
We held on. It was a great feeling. United as a team and winning again. We still have much to work on. We need to start scoring more goals and finishing our games strongly. But we are improving and thoroughly enjoying it!
Well done team!
