Dear F Team,
On what turn out to be a glorious summer day for the trip to Recreio we had a team of 15 lined up early, bar Mr Jones wh was caught short not only by the non-existant car park line at Kings Park but also by the cunning Recreio plan of having shut the side gate to stop easy access.
Some F teamers who arrived early we indeed shocked and dismayed to witness not 1 but 2 Recreio menbers remove a shirt and socks not only pitchside by right in front of the club..thus promting George to remove his tracksuit bottoms in retaliation before retireing to the changing rooms to add boots and socks ! Seems standards ahev indeed slipped.
So, to the game. Early practice saw divets and a lot od sods come out..and a cunning plan to start uphill with the sun in our eyes..mean second half the enemy would have it worse than us. As ever, the ever meticulous WMD had decided to start with a bare 11 on the pitch and sub in others later on. With a multiture of backs on hand ( not bare backs that is ) and limited midfileders, we started with Tong Ng in goal..anothe rmaster stroke from the WMD having spotted early on that he was kitted up, and a back line or 'returnee' George, David W and Julian. Tim and walter waited for their que and Feggus was in deep shock as the agressive line up say him advance to right half..knees atremble, literally. David G was in line with Ali-G and Andy, and Bettie moved out to wing in line with Mark..while the WMD took to the usiuul "cruisin' role upfront. Joel arrived unexpectantly, stil beating mr Jones by a good ten minutes to complete the bench.
As ever, the pitch, Recreio, the night before etc etc..led us to a completly crap first 10 minutes of play and we were all over the place..as Recreio looked like they may well be going to have the upper hand. Then we settled..Fegus's knees kicked into gear and we got going !
The backs all had a storning game from then on and especially Tony..not having palyed on grass since 1936..remember how the bounces and bobbles went and took everything Recreio tried and saved them all. George palyed as if he'd never left the olf F troop and was a dependable as ever picking up many a through ball or stopping attackers dead in theoir tracks. David W, Walter and Tim all had top games with Tim making I think at least ttwo line saves.
Andy in midfield was running all over the palce and hassling. tackling back and working well with the other midfielders. Fergus as noted..slipping slowly back into defense..was masterful in 'turf control" and distributing the ball upfield. Ali-G wa son song and bertoe was on fire..charging through the ranks and cahsing through balls to nearly score his first goal of the his season ( or any season it seems ) ! Joel was an added bones with fit legs and cahsing back at the times Recreio managed to coem back through the midfield.
Mark was rsuhing up and down the wings and had the closest of chances in the first half after an excellent build up, seeing his backstick hit go inches wide of the post. Mr Jones, still agrieved at haveing to walk an extar 138 paces from teh car park, decide to discuss this with the referee at soem length..pausing on to catch his breath ( and a green card ) to then note maybe his captain would perhaps liek to join in..to be given a "yellow" and a well deserved "rest just before half time , so generously allowing the 4 subs mor etiem to appreciate the summer sday and fresh air.
Soem time into the 1st half in our 3rd oir 4th short corner..Fergus..now way way upfield and psuhing out..gave it to David Gilmour who blasted it goalwards and straight past the keeper for a desewrved 1-0 lead. More chances came and were narrowly missed but it stayed that way to half time. A long talk ensued discussing the merits of palying with 11 men as the WMD had decided..or Chriss option of going odown to 10 and give Recrio a chance. eventually we decide Chris could start behibnd our gaol ( again ) to chat with Tony and then move on out once his "parking ticket / meter " was timed out.
The second half began well and not so long in..another attack say Berie blsitering throught the ranks and place a ball through to the WMD..who..carefully restraining his powerful shot ( rea mis-hit) guide teh ball to the far post as the final bobble thankfully took it inwards for a 2-0 lead.
On we rolled..recreio tried..and we tired a little. Tony had one more mazing save, having already pule doff one and doewn on the groend, the forward decide to flicked over him to gaol..up went Tonys are for a brilliant defelction past the post and over the bar. As the game neared its end they had 3 short coners and Tony and the defence also did well..but the whsitle blew..aloowing the last short..it went out..saved..moved out of the "D"..back in and a kind of liucky shot deflecte dup..to giev Recreio a face-saving gaol..but a 2 - 1 loss. VICTORY to the F's.
I think we had 75% of the game..so were unlucky not to win by mor ein a convicing win..but its alwways a tough oen on grass.
GREAT JOB..good day and we left Recreio to drink alone and cry into their beer, beaten on "home" turf.
Man-of-the-match...almost to Bertie..but in facxt to TONY NG..
Cheers also to David Watt for taking up the Rewffing mantle for the following game.
