Womens F 4-1 Aquila

03 December 2011

Subject: Match Report,  Sat 3rd Dec 2011:  The Foxes vs Aquila B @ HKFC:  Score 4-1 :-)

Classification: Public

On a stifling hot day for December the Foxes took to the pitch after much deliberation as to whether Aquila were bottom of the division due to them losing all their matches apart from the one they drew against us, or if they had given a walkover at any point.  Either way they were bottom of the division we were (and still are!) top of the division, so the psychological advantage was ours for the keeping!

It all began controversially enough within seconds of pushback, Annabel gets a smash in the face, the clock is stopped while any injury is assessed (she's happy to play on) before restarting with a bully-off to which Terry Mitchell stepped up.  A super swift little Aquila player won the ball and scooted off down the pitch before coming up against Claire and not getting very much further!

Our training was clearly paying off both the shooting practice and the twos and switching as we attacked their D.  Following Coach Claire's instructions to the letter, we had a couple of near miss shots on goal as soon as we stepped in the D and then Terry Mitchell broke away from the pack heading straight for the D.... Ali and Viv to each side for support which she didn't actually need and thumped it into the back of the goal for that fabulously satisfying clunk!  Score 1-0 to The Foxes....

Aquila began to step up their game and the Foxes had another couple of near misses before Aquila managed to break away and somehow find a gap in our sturdy defense to equalise.  It was a somewhat lucky goal that, much to The Foxes bemusement they celebrated like they just won the league!  Score 1-1

That was the shock we needed to pull ourselves together... shake off any rugby calendar launch party hangovers (well almost Mel!) and score again.  Within 3 minutes of their goal, Terry M had again broken away with Ali to her left yelling that she was there in support, so Terry slipped the ball left for Ali to push it into the left corner of the goal.  Clunk.... Yay!  Score to the Foxes 2-1.

Another couple of frustrating shots going ever so slightly wide followed a short corner or two and then after a little scrapping about in the D a wide open deflection with plenty of space for a big sweeping hit from Ali on the left, at an ordinarily tight angle and KA CLUNK!!  straight into the right hand corner!!  Whooop!!  Score 3-1 to The Foxes.

Half time talk from Claire, at 3-1 up was 'do we want to win this, because we deserve to?' and 'it's our pitch how dare they come here and think they can win... go out there an own our pitch!', 'Go out there and score 3 more' and 'Ali I want a hatrick from you'.... no pressure then!!

Back on the pitch there was much great defending from Kath, Christine, Claire, Parminder and Mel as Aquila tried to force an effective attack, with our mids Terri, Annabel and Sarah working hard to feed the ball up towards their D and help create chances for the forwards Viv, Prachetta, Terry and Ali.  It was a fast game with a few breaks from Aquila where one player (pesky #30 or 32) managed to get right through only to be stopped by a great save or three from Kath.

There was a classic moment with our birthday girl Viv speeding down the right wing and into the D... she took the ball left... took the ball right.... around the keeper a shot on goal.... and it went wide!  Aaaarrrggggh!!  Frustration and disbelief all round... and the sure fine of a Tequila shot promised after the match!

Following another short corner towards the end of the second half a deflected ball on the left found the end of Ali's stick to be sunk with the fourth satisfying clunk of the match and the much wished for hatrick for Ali!!  YAY!!  Score 4-1 to The Foxes.

Shortly afterwards Mel Mak went down... dropped like a stone... Oh noooo what happened, a sprained ankle, a twisted knee....??  Carried off the pitch, Coach Claire swiftly instructed Sarah to take her place and barked re-positioning orders to a few players so we re-organised and held it together for the remaining looooong minutes until the final whistle.  The injury??  Cramp, brought on by rather too much Champagne at the aforementioned rugby calendar launch party!

Final score 4-1 to the Foxes who maintain their top of the table position!   A huge thank you to Coach Claire it being her second coaching win of the day!
