Mens G 1-1 Skyers...G for Grit!

26 January 2010

HKFC ‘G’ vs Skyer’s

It took the G’s a full squad and a lot of subbing, as usual; keep up with the younger & fitter Skyer’s. Determined not to repeat past errors, the G’s got off to a quick start. Be it more of a scramble than tidy give and goes and despite some control and a few helpful tips from our umpire, ‘Chappie,’ Mike and Vince didn’t get the bounce they needed to capitalize. After some good play we could unfortunately do no better than draw nil-nil by the end of the first half. One of our rookie players, Mike Balo came in and filled the big boots left empty by an injured Alistair, while Kevin, Taylor & Timo also hardly missed a step while filling in for other regulars. Hoping not to rely on our other rookie, J.D. to keep us in the game for much longer, Gary takes a seemingly innocent long corner. While perfectly demonstrating the ‘self-pass,’ he dribbles in the ‘D’ and with a quick smash and a deflection it ricochets into the net and the G’s are up by one only eight minutes into the second half. With the squad rotating we kept chasing them and they kept flying. With less than ten to go and still unable to beat J.D. the Skyer’s had to rely on our own misfortune in order to tie it up. Marking his man and playing solid ‘D’ as we’ve come to expect from Jonny, an unlucky defection off his foot went up and into the top corner tying the game. Just to remind you all that this is a fine as section 7 of the Charter clearly states; “Scoring on your own goal,” and even wedding bells are not going to excuse you or anyone else from a team fine! So, after two thirty minute halves and how ever many minutes there are between halves, it all ends in a 1-1 draw.

Though there is certainly nothing wrong with fighting hard for a point, the Skyer’s goal scorer was not listed on the game sheet as our extremely frustrated umpire made sure the entire crowd gathered on this lovely Sunday evening clearly know that, justice may yet prevail for the well deserving ‘G’ squad!
