Wednesday 27th of January. Middle of the week and somehow we find ourselves all the way out at Kings park, at -17 degrees 8.30 pm. While, back at home we have piles of coursework, essays, math homework and work reports (or whatever you guys do at 'work').
So there it is, the starting whistle, and off we go to attempt to out run and essentially annihilate my classmates, or also known as The Under 18's Hong Kong team. To our delight, we started off with a bang, holding our position, and distributing the ball out wide. We even managed a few (although unsuccessful) shots on goal. We were on fire. But then, out of nowhere they managed to sneak the ball into the net. We were distraught. None the less, we kept on fighting, we couldn't let a bunch of 'kids' beat us. Minutes before half time, we manage to get a corner, Terry Mitchell pushed it out to Beccy Mould, and after a few nifty passes around the D, the ball got to Lara Fabiani, who eloquently placed it into the net with her unique "backhand, no need to look or stop "hit.
After half time, we were back on the pitch, playing even better than the first half. The ball hardly left their half, our passing was nothing short of amazing and frankly we made them look terrible. However, we weren't quite able to get the ball in the net, which is a move completely alien to us. 10 minutes left and we thought we had them, but there it was again, another deflection into our goal, putting the score at 2-1 ... to them. However, we kept our calm and kept persevering, as us underdogs do, but to our dismay at the last second, they get a short corner.
The whistle is blown and seconds after, their third and final shot is taken, and the score board reads 3-1 to the U18's. However, morally this isn't the case, the match was an intense yet equal match. We played tremendously and refused to give up. And although, the school girls won on the score board, you'll be glad to know that we won in the long term since Lara Fabiani has successfully managed to scare these girls beyond repair.
