Mens H 7 - 2 Scorpion B

07 February 2010

 HKFC H's 7 - 2 Scorpion B : Belgian biscuits for breakfast

We had watched Scorpion's two Belgian wonderkids tear apart Shaheen at
King's Park recently.  This was likely to be our toughest game of the
season.  Chappie had taken his seat in the dugout more interested in
watching these two top class individuals than our own team.  He had heard
about the 30-yard aerials, no-look passes, reverse stick strikes into top
corners and wizard dribbling.  The questions on everybody's lips were why
were they playing for Scorpion B and would they live up to the hype?

We got off to a flyer when I scored in the first two minutes, slotting in a
pinpoint through ball from Nev Watkins.  As I turned back to return to my
own half, my right eye socket suffered an almighty collision with Tim Loh's
shoulder (backing up, so he says), which, more or less, knocked me out for
15 minutes.

Scorpion's immediate response was to go on an all-out attack.  For a large
part of the game, Scorpions had the better of the possession and the
territory.  Often they had players unmarked, due to the sheer numbers they
threw forward and shots rained down on our goal.  Amazingly, we went into
the half-time break 5-0 up.  On the counter-attack, Mark Kan nipped in to
collect a Alan Powrie pass into the D which a defender was favourite to deal
with, but completely messed up.  2-0.  Brett Goebel sledge-hammered an Andy
Dale short corner that had defenders on the goal-line scattering for their
lives.  3-0.  Brett scored another short corner before the break to make it
4-0.  Then the double-act worked in reverse when Andy tapped in a deflected
Brett short corner strike for 5-0.

In the second half, Martin Lane had a rare excursion in the halves and set
up Guy Higgins for another trademark goal from the top of the D for 6-0.
Guy Higgins, at his predatory best, tucked away another similar goal from
the top of the D to make it 7-0.  Guy has now scored so many from the same
position, arriving late into the D, he can now do it with his eyes closed.
Scorpions' two consolation goals were immaterial, as we used the second half
to give everybody a good amount of pitch-time, experiment with some new
positioning and we protected others from injury that may have been in danger
of over-playing in recent weeks.  At 7-0 up, our minds had long wandered off
to the shelter from the rain that is the Sportsman's Bar and the hot
cappuccinos that awaited us.

The goal-scorers have been mentioned, but the stars of Sunday show were
undoubtedly Joel Chu and David Smyth, whose hatchet jobs on the two Belgian
kids, "CC Yeung" and "CK Yeung", worked a treat.  Without them executing the
pre-determined game-plan, we could have been looking at a completely
different result.  These kids had in the last week put eight goals past an
Elite team and five past title rivals, SSSC.  Chappie was keen as mustard to
have them on his watch-list of future signings, only to find out that they
are exchange students here for half a year before returning to Belgium.  Two
hockey section memberships should be reserved for them on the off-chance
they return.  They are that good.  However, they were not good enough to get
the better of the class acts that are Joel and Smythy.
