Womens D 1 - 1 KCC

06 March 2010

 HKFC D v KCC (1-1), Saturday 6 March

We were all psyched for Saturday's game, this was the one team that we had beaten this season. It was great to see that we had so many members of the D team willing and able to play, with 19 of us signed up!!

We certainly took heed of Chappie's feedback following previous matches and made a strong and confident start to the game. We played the ball out wide to the wings and defended strongly. Our stick work has improved immensely with Maya playing some great left to rights and Aiko's little flicks of the ball over the defenders' sticks to name a few. We took a few knocks, but those injured, ran off for ice and then came straight back-on with a fighting spirit - Becky took a ball to the throat, Aiko to the foot....

Then it came to a defensive short corner. We stopped the first shot, defended the second, Ida was on the ground, Kim was diving for the post, but their persistence finally paid off and they eventually found the back of the net. But we were not to be defeated. We struck back soon after with a great goal, right on the angle to the far corner of the goal, a fabulous shot from Mafalda. So we were back in the game.

We continued to have a strong second half, Kim worked the ball well around the mid-field with some great examples of both attacking and defensive play, which led her to win the MVP from Chappie. Then in the final seconds of the game, having saved several more short corners, we had our chance. Terry managed to skip passed their final defender, and from the deflection, scored a goal. However, the whistle had blown and the umpire chose to call a short corner rather than award the goal, she then blew the final whistle blew. It was to be the last shot. Everyone tried their very best, but unfortunately, KCC were able to find the back-line and the game was over.

I think we should take great encouragement from our performance. We played well together as a team, we talked to each other, called for the ball and defended well. The hour warm up before the game, most definitely helped wake us up and meant we were a threat to KCC right from the start.

Well done everyone, see you on Tuesday night and good luck for the game on Saturday!
