KO Cup Game 1
Sat, 24 April 2010 4:30 pm at HV2
HKFC G 6: 0 Phoenix B
The game was looking to be an easier win than the Goddesses would have thought as the opposition hadn't shown up with minutes left to the start of the game and a walkover seemed to be the call of the day. Alas, they did stroll onto the pitch at 4:29...all 9 of them!!!!
With the outcome deciding whether the Gs would go into the Bowl or Saucer draw, the team was very much aiming to make the Bowl competition. Having come off a disastrous game (quite posssibly the worst of the season!!) the previous week, the focus going into this one was to play OUR game and dictate play. Phoenix started off strong with their first play with a couple nifty zig zag passes and were soon pressing the Gs' 23 m. But the Gs defence intercepted their play and cleared the ball to the sidelines.
From here on out, for the first half, the Gs dominated with the ball hardly ever crossing the halfway line with the exception of a restart after a goal. The mids and forwards played a beautiful game creating channels and making stick to stick passes on attack. Pracheta Mehtaji got the scoring started with a lovely tap in from the left. January Geisert soon put us up by another, out-muscling the opposition to get the ball on a penalty corner for a pass in from the right. Before the half was up, Pracheta had bagged her second of the game. 3 nil it was to the Gs at the breather.
After a quick pep talk from Simon on maintaining focus and holding ground in tackles, the Gs were ready for a likely recharged Phoenix B. It wasn't time to let up and a shut out was the order of the day. The Gs came on strong and Pracheta soon ratcheted up her third and fourth goals of the game to put the Gs up 5:0...our biggest score of the season.
Even with as fantastical a score as ever the Gs could have hoped, the pressure was unrelenting. Everybody wanted to get a piece of the goal-scoring pie. Mary Williams had a couple shots on goal as did Kath Sly. Heck, everyone from mids to forwards had a shot at goal at some point. But with minutes left till the final whistle, Mary did find her golden moment when her hit sounded out against the backboards...6:0 it was. And so it ended. A great effort to kickstart (or push back) our quest for the Bowl.
Player of the match....FOUR goal scoring Pracheta Mehtaji...watch out golden stick contenders, who'd've thunk it?
