Mens G 1 - 2 Police A

21 November 2010
 Police A v HKFC G  score: 2-1.  21st November 2010

After a string of 3 straight victories the G Team’s heads were up but playing against one of the better teams in the division was always going to be an arduous task without a full complement of substitutes. As it turned out this was a hard fought battle that ended in cruel defeat right at the death - so close to securing a well earned draw.

We seemed to be “Walking on the Moon” in the first ten minutes - the hot dry conditions “The Invisible Sun” seemed to sap our concentration as a Police enquiry led down their right wing switched quickly to the left allowed them to take advantage of an overlap. Despite the quick reactions of JD scrambling to get across his goal line the Police took the lead 1-0. It was an early shock. Then battle commenced and at this stage it is wholly appropriate to mention the fantastic “Synchronicity” of our committed midfield. Thanks to the non-stop running of Rod “I Can’t Stand Losing” Kormylo, Vincent and Prakash “Every Breath he Takes” Kirpalani we managed to foil any Police investigations into our D. The defence should also get a mention here - Kevin, Ray and Balo showed their courage and physical strength throughout the match in difficult conditions against a fast young side with good stick skills and Ali “The King of Pain” Cameron held the central role and had their attack under lock and key. Time after time he was there to make crucial interceptions and distributed the ball intelligently. Gary “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” Sharma ,showing the level of commitment and aggression that so typifies the G Team spirit, unfortunately succumbed to a hamstring injury early in the second half which wiped out our substitutes bench. A complete ”Da Do Do Do Dooo Da da daa..”…disaster.. for our 11 players remaining on the pitch who had no choice but to battle on. However our resilient midfield rose to the challenge and plugged on in blazing sunshine wishing they could pause for a cup of “Tea (in the Sahara)”. It is in this midfield that we have to appoint the difficult choice of Men of the Match - Brian “Every Little Thing he does is Magic” Schwarzwalder ,who basically ran the equivalent of a marathon in 70 minutes and James, whose sheer determination and guts to pursue all lines of enquiry, are both worthy winners of this award.

The “Message (in a Bottle)” from the touchline was to keep going, keep fighting and that’s exactly what happened. True to our trademark Houdini act, it started with a typically inch perfect pass from Prakash then a quick interchange with Vincent , a surging run by James which broke through the heavily manned Police cordon and his perfectly timed cross was converted by …guess who?...yes than man is back…. Michael “Demolition Man” Vrontamitis! Up until then he had cut an oh “So Lonely” figure up front as an early injury scare caused great concern in his first match back after a lengthy lay off but boy what a return! Scores a cracker in his fist match back - 1-1!!

However it was not to be our day - J -“The Goal (bed) is too Big Without You” D, surely another close contender for Man of the Match yet again made some fantastic saves both in the air and on the ground but even his superhuman heroics could not prevent the Police’s winner right at the death as one of their forward’s zigzagging run ended with a well taken winner. Unfortunately there was “No Time (left) This Time” for the G Team to play their get out of jail card but it didn’t stop us singing when the final whistle went....

“The G Team (I) Cant Stand Losing”

We’ve hurt you so many times today

And I guess its all true what Golden Rod says

You don’t ever want to play us again

And your goalie’s going kill us and he’s 6 ft 10

I guess you call us cour..age..ous

but we do not regret playing like this

(Chorus)

I cant I cant I cant stand losing

I cant I cant I cant stand losing

I see you sent our match cards back

And our hockey sticks their all scratched

We cant see the point in goalless plays

When no referee listens to a word Gary says

I guess you call it lack of fear...less..ness

But to carry on losing doesn’t make no sense

(Chorus)

I cant I cant I cant stand losing

I cant I cant I cant stand losing

I guess this is our last goodbye

And you won’t score so we wont cry

You’ll be sorry when your legs are lead

And all our midfield will be on your head

I guess you call us the great G Team side

But we’re too full to swallow our pride

(Chorus)

I cant I cant I cant stand losing

I cant I cant I cant stand losing

Cheers

Hobo
