Womens F 0 - 0 Valley C

17 December 2011

We were relishing this top of the table clash to such an extent, some of us had even gone to the trouble of getting so drunk on Friday afternoon we were tucked up in bed/passed out before 11pm so as to have a good night’s sleep!

Alex is a total star for volunteering to step in for Kath in goal (once she worked out that the shorts weren’t arm protectors, anyway!).  It must have been fairly quiet for periods of time because we were chatting about how stressful it is to have nothing for ages and then all of a sudden being under tremendous pressure. There was one absolutely horrible moment when Alex took a step forward, then sensibly deciding not to leave the goal she stopped…I took one step back at the same time to get out of her way and said, ‘have you got it?’, Alex said, ‘NO!!!’…we both said ‘S**T!!!!’ and watched helplessly as their forward had a clear shot on goal and luckily put it wide.

Whilst Alex and I were having a cup of tea at the back, there were various incidents going on, in the middle of the pitch…Mel H hit someone in the head with the ball, Annabel hit herself in the head with the ball, Lou got a green card for being a bit feisty, Mel H then fell over and lost her scab (lovely!), Clare B had to ‘have a break’, cramp or something (code in the F team for maybe being a little bit dehydrated after the previous night’s drinking…), then she ran back on apologizing for smelling so bad and warning us not to come too close (err…did you forget to wash your kit Clare?).

...at the other end however…we tried short corners, we tried hitting, we tried chipping…but their goalie kept diving onto the floor and stopped what surely should have been numerous goals with reflex after reflex saves.  As the match progressed a slight sense of panic started to set in amongst all of us.  We were by far the better team and really wanted to win so much but just couldn’t get the ball past their goalkeeper and we were running out of time.  In the end the score stayed at 0-0 and it wasn’t to be but we will get them in round three!  Valley’s GK (who had played well for the A’s the previous week) got MVP and I hear they felt very lucky that they hadn’t lost.

Highlights!

Happy birthday to Vanessa

Thank you so much to the G’s who played for us (Ash, Vanessa, Denise).  Denise was a particular star playing out of position at right back

Thank you to coach C for changing your flight and giving us champagne…we will chip the ball over the goalkeeper next time

Welcome back to Clare C – hope your hand makes a speedy recovery

Lots of terrier-like running down the right wing from Mel M (you are going to score a goal this season!)

Supporters throwing beer in the dugout

Chappie’s Santa hat and Christmas spirit

Thanks for voting me MVP…although I’m not sure I deserved it as everyone played so well

Have a really wonderful Christmas and New Year everyone!
